Resident Stories

Here are a few stories from our residents:

“It’s enlightening. The staff is awesome. I’m feeling super comfortable. God is working in my life. Thank you.” – Shelly

“I have called Turning Point my home for the past 10 months. This place means so much to me it is hard to put in to words. I plan to stay for several more months rokenecause the love and support I’ve found here is so valuable to me. It is a safe place to rebuild or just build your life. I’m grateful that I had a second chance and Turning Point is a huge part of making that second chance so fruitful. I will continue to give back after I move out because a place like this gave a woman like me hope. I hope it continues to serve women for many more years. Turning Point Home is something really special. I am forever grateful for the staff, residents, and board who make this magic possible.” – Ashleigh B.

Just knowing that I was on the list for a bed at Turning Point made my stay in primary treatment much more hopeful. Feeling safe and secure makes all the difference in the recovery process. Being a woman of 53 with repeated relapses and nowhere to go if not placed in a treatment program was a very bleak future for myself. I now can see a bit of light that can achieved by staying willing, open minded and working the steps. I thank Turning Point for choosing me and giving me a place to call home. I am excited to walk hand in hand with my new sober sisters and being teachable by staff and my sponsor.” – Cat

“My name is Catalina, I am an Alcoholic. I’ve been at Turning Point Home for a little over a month and my experience here, as of yet, has been amazing. I love this place and the women in it. The house has a great energy about it. I feel safe and cared for here.

The Staff is very special. They all care about me and my recovery. I’ve already learned so much from each of them. I know that if I have any problems or just want to talk, someone is available for me to confer with.

The women staying here all want to be here. They all want their recovery. It’s great to have that kind of support around me. I am very grateful.

I love my room, I have a lot of space. My bed is soft. My roommate is awesome. The food here is really good. The meals are well balanced and cooking is fun. The house is warm and inviting.

I love Turning Point and will recommend it to all who need this kind of treatment.” – Catalina B

Turning Point has been the greatest blessing in my life and in my recovery. I was broken when I came in and this house has saved my life. I feel safe and supported by my sisters in the house. Staff is always available for guidance and if I just need to talk. I have been granted grace and a place to recovery with dignity and I am very grateful to Turning Point Home” – Andrea I.

“Turning Point…As seen through my eyes…

Every morning, while enjoying my first cup of coffee, I purposely look at the “bricks of wisdom” in the Meditation Garden. The one I dwell on is from Tim L. and it reads, “You are safe here”. I understand this simple truth for me, more deeply and more comprehensively every day.

I knew on the day I applied and interviewed, May 4th 2016, that this HOME would be the place I would heal, not only my alcohol addiction, but my heart and the shattered pieces I have carried on the journey getting here.

During my 43 days here, I have observed unconditional positive regard between peers, staff and residents. That is how things should be, but the reality is much different in many places.

Please know, each day I live here, grow here, hurt here, and seek God’s next indicated step – I learn more lessons about TPH being God’s Hand extended.

In the book, The Servant, by James Hunter – he introduces Servant Leadership and the Inverted pyramid of leadership – In TPH case: The BOD supports and undergirds the Executive Director who the same for the Program Coordinator and both together support and nourish the rest of the staff who walk faithfully with residents. So Blessed are WE ALL — Anonymous

National Movement Heroes in Recovery to Host Annual 6K Run/Walk in San Diego on November 12

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 12, 2016 (San Diego, CA) Heroes in Recovery, a movement celebrating the heroic efforts of those who seek addiction and mental health treatment is returning to San Diego for their annual 6K run/walk. The race is a 6K, not a 5K, which not only represents the six letters in the word “HEROES,” but also symbolizes the extra distance people in recovery go to achieve a healthier lifestyle. Heroes in Recovery was ignited by Foundations Recovery Network (FRN), a family of treatment centers, which includes inpatient and outpatient treatment centers located in southern California.

The Heroes race in San Diego will also benefit local charity The Turning Point Home which is a community-based, peer oriented, residential recovery home that provides shelter, food and recovery services to alcoholic women.
“We are thrilled and honored to be the charity beneficiary of this year’s Heroes in Recovery 6k,” said Tim Lucey, president of the board of directors for The Turning Point Home. “This is a great way to celebrate recovery, and it will help us deliver our message of hope for woman recovering from alcoholism.”

The Heroes 6K will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 9:00 am. The race starts and finishes at De Anza Cove Park and takes participants on a scenic 6K (3.728 mile) course along Mission Bay. All registered participants will receive a race shirt and finisher’s medal. This is a family friendly event and will include post-race food, entertainment, cash prizes for placers and raffles for participants and spectators.

Early registration for the 6K is $25, and regular registration increases to $30 and eventually $35 as race day draws near. Walk-up registration on race day is $40.

For more information and to register for the event go to: http://www.heroes6K.com.

About Heroes in Recovery:

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), 23 million people needed treatment last year and only three million sought help. Ten million Americans did not receive needed mental health care. The stigma associated with substance abuse and mental health disorders creates a significant barrier that keeps individuals and families from seeking help.

Heroes in Recovery is a grassroots movement intended to remove the social stigma associated with people who are in recovery, to recognize the heroic effort it takes to overcome the obstacles in seeking help, and to celebrate the act of preventing the past from kidnapping the future. While the movement initially focuses on persons recovering from addictive behavior, it is meant also to recognize heroes recovering from many other types of disorders and trauma that can often accompany an addiction.

Each Heroes in Recovery 6K race serves as an educational tool for the community and also reminds individuals who are on a personal journey of recovery that many others are on that road with them. For more information or to register for any of the Heroes 6K races, go to HeroesInRecovery6K.com.

Our Night at The Ball Game

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Last week, the Padres treated Turning Point residents and staff to enjoy an unforgettable night of baseball in the ownership suite. It was a joyous and unforgettable experience for all of us. We are most grateful to the Padres for their kindness and generosity.

Here’s what our residents had to say about the experience:

Sitting in the owner’s suite at the Padres game was truly a once in a lifetime experience. The view was amazing from behind home plate, and as the stands filled the excitement was palpable. The staff was super attentive and friendly, and the food was better than I’ve had at any ballpark before. The whole experience from start to finish, from the plush seating areas, to the food, to the amazing view was incredibly swanky. If I could stay at Turning Point another year and have the opportunity to go again, I totally would! I haven’t smiled that big, or laughed that hard, or danced that much in a long time!

Even as a corporate employee given “box seats” by the company I worked for I’ve not been treated with so much respect nor given such reward. The owner’s box was not only extravagant but the employee’s welcomed us ad provided service fit for owners…. definitely not second rate. The experience gave me a boost in my self-worth…almost a metaphor for life and not having to settle for the cheap seats! – Thank you! Shannon Q.

My name is Catalina. My night is the owner’s suite was an experience of a lifetime. I felt so blessed to be a part of it. Seeing the field brought a tear to my eye. It was beautiful. I’ve never been to a ballgame before, so it was amazing.

The set up was fun and imaginative from the baseball bowls to the peanuts and crackerjacks. The food was great – everything you could want. The servers were thoughtful and attentive. They made me feel special. I had such a great time. I want to thank everyone. I’ll never forget my night in the Padres owner’s suite.

The Padres game was one that I will never forget…Feeling so honored to be able to share the experience with the women, staff, and board members. The ownership suite no less with all the special amenities was a treat. The food and service were incredible and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. – Staff member Trish Kane
